OCR: The hoary marmot is easily recognized by its loud whistle which signals the approach of intruders. Marmots will also hiss, squeal, and yip. They are pre- dominantly gray with a darker lower back and face and a dark, reddish tail. A white patch marks the bridge of its nose. Its cousin, the ground hog, belongs to the same genus. Marmots live among the rocks of talus slopes and are most active in early morning and late afternoon. They feed on grasses, flowering plants, berries, roots, mosses, and lichens. Their predators include eagles, foxes, wolverines, coyotes, wolves, and bears. Smart marmots have learned to locate their burrows in rocky areas which offer more protection against digging grizzly bears.
